It's too late for a Sweet Sixteen, but what if Mahalia had a coming-out party? A love letter to romantic comedies, sweet sixteen blowouts, Black joy, and queer pride.
Mahalia Harris wants.
She wants a big Sweet Sixteen like her best friend, Naomi.
She wants the super-cute new girl Siobhan to like her back.
She wants a break from worrying—about money, snide remarks from white classmates, pitying looks from church ladies . . . all of it.
Then inspiration strikes: It’s too late for a Sweet Sixteen, but what if she had a coming-out party? A singing, dancing, rainbow-cake-eating celebration of queerness on her own terms.
The idea lights a fire beneath her, and soon Mahalia is scrimping and saving, taking on extra hours at her afterschool job, trying on dresses, and awkwardly flirting with Siobhan, all in preparation for the coming out of her dreams. But it’s not long before she’s buried in a mountain of bills, unfinished schoolwork, and enough drama to make her English lit teacher blush. With all the responsibility on her shoulders, will Mahalia’s party be over before it’s even begun?
A novel about finding yourself, falling in love, and celebrating what makes you you.
Rainbow attire is highly encouraged for this event!
Camryn Garrett grew up in New York and began her writing career at thirteen, when she was selected as a TIME for Kids reporter, interviewing celebrities like Warren Buffett and Kristen Bell. Since then, her writing has appeared on MTV and in HuffPost and Rookie magazine, and she was recently selected as one of Teen Vogue’s “21 Under 21: Girls Who Are Changing the World.” When she’s not writing, she studies film at NYU, and she’s a proud advocate for diverse stories and storytellers in any medium. Her first two novels, Full Disclosure and Off the Record, received rave reviews from outlets such as EW, Glamour, and SLJ, which said, in its starred review, “Readers will fall in love.” Friday I'm in Love is her third novel and first rom-com. Find her on Twitter @dancingofpens and Instagram @camryngwrites.
Victoria Lee grew up in Durham, North Carolina, where she spent her childhood writing ghost stories and fantasizing about attending boarding school. She has a Ph.D. in psychology, which she uses to overanalyze fictional characters and also herself. Lee is the author of A Lesson in Vengeance as well as The Fever King and its sequel, The Electric Heir. She lives in New York City with her partner, cat, and malevolent dog. 2019 has been an incredible year for Black women and to celebrate that fact we thought we host a cute Friday night soirée at The Curtain Private Members Club.
As well as being a celebration it’s also a welcome party for Carmyn Garrett, author of the brilliant YA debut ‘Full Disclosure.
To celebrate the release of her debut novel Full Disclosure, journalist and activist Camryn Garrett will be joined by author Alice Oseman (Solitaire, Heartstopper) for her only UK public event at Waterstones Kensington.
FULL DISCLOSURE is an honest, affecting, sex-positive, laugh-out-loud-funny young adult novel starring Simone Garcia-Hampton, a black teen born HIV-positive. Raised by loving queer parents who assure her that she is not defined by her diagnosis, Simone navigates a whole new world of fear, disclosure and radical self-acceptance when she falls in love – and lust – for the first time. Simone’s journey to share her secret while still protecting her heart is a thoughtful, compelling heart-warming look at the particular challenges of adolescence.
Come and hear Camryn and Alice discuss their shared experience of getting a book deal at only 17, their thoughts on growing up on social media and the importance of representation and diversity within YA.
The event will be chaired by freelance literary journalist and Editor Sarah Shaffi.
